Hepatitis B and C Co-Infection among HIV-Positive Patients Attending Art at General Hospital Kaltungo, Gombe State, Nigeria

Background: HBV and HCV infection, have been found to worsen the health of PLWAS, thereby impairing treatments management. HIV, HBV, are transmitted through similar routes hence presence infection with any them could be a risk factor for others. Objective: Determine prevalence HBV/HCV co-infection in persons HIV. Method: This was serological study For Hepatitis B surface antigen investigated antibodies HCV. The included HIV-positive patients registered ART clinic at General Hospital Kaltungo, irrespective age. Ethical approval gotten, consent received from patients, patient’s information kept confidential. Prevalence determined by comparing total positive test, overall population tested. Results: A 170 individuals took part study. had 59 (34.7%) males mean age (standard deviation) 40.9 (11.4) years 111 (65.3%) females, having Mean (Standard Deviation) 37.1 (11.0) years. result revealed statistically significant, high negative association between viral load values marital status (rs=-0.812, rs=-0.812, n=170, p=0.000, α=0.001 significant level) 66% degree variability. Also, observed positive, within loads HIV\HBV HIV\HCV (rs=-0.762, 58% variability using Spearman correlation. Conclusion: Co-infection higher than that No all three viruses this can improve treatment then screening both HCV, must become guidelines.
